The song, New Soul, by French born Israeli Yael Naim (see full lyrics and P.S. below), says that you are a new soul living in a strange world filled with joy and fear. You’re a young soul learning how to give and take and trying to figure out what life is all about by making every possible mistake.
Yeah…I have been there and made almost every possible mistake in life! But I love this song! It captures a very important biblical truth: YOU are a young soul an eternal spiritual being having a human experience. YOU are a new soul, an eternal soul, created to walk with God and to experience his love, mercy, grace and friendship today and into eternity.
If you hang with seniors for very long, and really listen to them, you begin to realize that they are not old! Yes their bodies, memories, history and the way they act and speak may be old, but they have a young and vibrant soul and spirit under that old exterior. In light of eternity, billions and billions of years in heaven with God, their soul is still young even after 70, 80 or 90 years. Often times their memories of their childhood and youth are vivid and alive. Their dreams, hopes and desires are the same as a 21 year old, but they are often unable to express them or live them out as they wish. In reality, every senior is young at heart and has a young soul. When you begin to realize and understand this simple truth your whole view of seniors, of old age of your soul will be transformed.
Although I love this song it misses a very important fact: even though YOU are a young soul your Body is dying and decaying because of sin. The bible says this about your Body: “For he knows our frame (Body); he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more”. Psalm 103: 14-16
Many other verses in the bible describe our bodies as a breath, vapor, dung, ashes, etc. Wow! That’s depressing. I don’t like being called “dung”…but it’s true. Your Body is slowly dying. So, the bad news is your Body is getting old and dying…bummer! But the good news is YOU, the real YOU, your soul is young, new and made for eternity. Jesus said, “And I know that God’s commandment is eternal life” John12:50.
There is another important truth that the bible teaches: YOU have to choose between eternal life and eternal death. Eternal life is found in Jesus.
I Thessalonians 5:9-11 reads: “For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep (dead) we might live with him.”
YOU (your soul…not your dying body) will live forever with God if you believe in Jesus as your Savior and God, and surrender your life to Him as your Lord. Paul wrote in II Corinthians 4:16-18: “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self (Body) is wasting away, our inner self (YOU) is being renewed day by day…For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen (YOU your soul) are eternal”. The most significant thing about YOU is not your body, that is decaying and dying, it is your young soul and your eternal relationship with God!
In closing, stop seeing yourself and others as old. Begin to see yourself through God’s eyes; no matter your age YOU are a young soul, a new soul, a spiritual being having a human experience. But YOU were created for eternity. May YOU find eternal life in Jesus today!
